Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has announced that eBooks are outselling traditional hardbacks at Amazon.com. Over the past three months, Amazon sold 143 Kindle e-books in the United States for every 100 hardcovers, Bezos said. In the last month, the difference was even bigger: 180 Kindle titles for every 100 hardbacks. Of course, sales of e-books still trail far behind those of paperbacks, but the gap is narrowing, just as the gap between eBook and hardcover sales is widening.
Some commentators has complained that amazon’s numbers are distorted by the unusual number of independent authors publishing eBooks for the Kindle platform. But either way, the trend towards eBooks and eBook readers continues to impact traditional print. Traditional publishers have no choice but to plan for a predominately electronic future.
