It has been five years since Japanese automaker Subaru introduced the redesigned Impreza in the United States auto market. The introduction of the said redesigned Impreza has made waves in the auto industry. In fact, the Subaru Impreza has set the benchmark for future compact sports sedan in the country.

During those five years, the Impreza has received many upgrades including a facelift which gives it a look similar to an Alfa Romeo. For the 2008 model year, Subaru is slated to introduce the newest installment of the Impreza, but the company will no longer be offering the sports-tuned Subaru Impreza WRX.

The street legal rally car is called the GB270 which comes from the United Kingdom’s Rally GB. The said auto model was designed by Prodrive. The motorsports and automotive engineering company designed the last of the GBs to be instant classic rally cars.

The engineering team behind the development of the last of the GBs has given the car a modified version of its standard engine. The original engine of the Subaru Impreza is a 2.5-liter boxer engine. After the modifications done to the engine, it now produces 266 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. That power and torque output is 40 hp and 74 lb-ft more than the output of the standard engine.

The standard engine can propel the Impreza to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 5.9 seconds. With the modified engine, the GB can reach that speed from a standstill in just 5.3 seconds. With increased torque, the GB has better acceleration. Stopping power is provided by efficient and capable Subaru brakes which are known for their reliability. From a standstill to 100 miles per hour, the conventional engine would take 14.4 seconds but with the Prodrive modified engine, 100 mph can be attained within 13.9 seconds.

Aside from the modifications on the engine, the Subaru Impreza WRX comes equipped with a lowering spring kit which gives the Impreza a lowered profile. Reduced air drag is the result of this addition. Sportier handling is also improved with the sports tuning of the Impreza. According to Subaru, the last GBs will also be equipped with a quickshift gearchange. Included in the package are 18×7.5-inch GT1 wheels.

On the outside, the last units of the Impreza WRX were given a new rear spoiler and mesh grille for the sedan variant. For the sports wagon version of the WRX is given a new rear waist spoiler, front and rear aerodynamic pieces and black mesh grille and gloss black rollers.

While many performance enthusiasts will be clamoring to buy one, Subaru announced that only a handful of these hopefuls would be able to take home the final edition of the Subaru Impreza WRX. This is because only 400 units will be manufactured by the Japanese automaker. 300 of this will be sedans while the remaining 100 will be wagons.

According to Subaru, the Impreza WRX will be offered with optional features which include an ICE pack which is consisted of a Clarion SatNav and iPod adaptor as well as a Bluetooth phone kit. Other options include Alcantara leather for the interior, and glass window tinting.

The Japanese automaker Isuzu has released the details and other changes to its 2008 model year lineup of pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) sold in the U.S. market. Aside from the numerous upgrades and new components, the 2008 Isuzu truck and SUV models offer a host of optional special packages for its customers. Isuzu Motors America, Inc also announced the base manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) for these models.

First off is the 2008 Isuzu Extended Cab Pickup. This truck model is available in i-290 4×2 and i-370 4×2 variants. The 2008 Isuzu Extended Cab i-290 4×2 is equipped with a standard 2.9-liter four-cylinder engine under its hood (with Isuzu oxygen sensor), delivering 185 horsepower coupled with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The Extended Cab i-370 4×2 boasts a 3.7-liter inline five-cylinder engine capable of producing 242 hp, and mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Customers can choose Radiant Orange Metallic, Midnight Metallic and Cool Slate Metallic exterior colors.

According to Isuzu press release, features and some changes for the 2008 Extended Cab Pickup include fog lights, sliding rear window and leather-wrapped steering wheel now standard on i-370, head-curtain side-impact airbags, automatic locking rear differential, electronic traction control, AM/FM stereo with six-disc in-dash CD changer (i-370), new optional integrated trailer hitch and wiring harness (i-370), i-290 towing capacity increases 100 pounds, and i-370 towing capacity increases 1,500 pounds.

Now for the 2008 Isuzu Crew Cab Pickup, the vehicle comes in with single i-370 variant, but with two drive train configurations including 4×2 and 4×4. The Crew Cab Pickup is available in LS trim package, and the new Comfort Package consisting of stand alone options for the customers including AM/FM stereo with six-disc in-dash CD changer, seek-and-scan, digital clock, auto-tone control, speed-compensated volume, TheftLock and Radio Data System.

Other features of the 2008 Isuzu Crew Cab Pickup include auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and outside temperature indicator, leather seating surfaces, eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, six-way power adjustable front passenger’s seat, adjustable head restraints, dual-level heated front seats, sliding rear window and automatic locking rear differential, and electronic traction control.

Starting price for the i-290 4×2 Extended Cab S is at $18,084 USD, and $25,214 for the i-370 4×2 Crew Cab LS.

Meanwhile, the Isuzu Ascender SUV also comes with upgrades and some changes for the 2008 model year. Head-curtain side-impact airbags are now standard on all models. Customers can choose several trim packages and drive train configurations such as 2WD S, 4WD S, 2WD LS, 4WD LS, and Luxury Package. Starting MSRP for the 2008 Isuzu Ascender S 2WD is at $27,884.

Will the OVF, the Open Virtual Machine Format, really make it easier to manage virtual resources across multi-platform environments?

Like any standard, that depends on how much support it gets and whether or not any rival proposals try to enter the field. On both of those counts, then, it looks like OVF stands a good chance of avoiding what would otherwise be a messy battle for the right to govern the virtual enterprise.

Citrix this week announced a new set of management tools conforming to OVF, which is in the final stages of ratification by the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) and has already garnered the support of Dell, HP, IBM, Microsoft and VMware. The toolkit that is slated to come out of Citrix’ “Project Kensho” is aimed at creating virtual appliances capable of running on any hypervisor, ushering in a virtual world in which the underlying platform is largely irrelevant to the application.

At the moment, Citrix is the only major virtualization vendor to formally embrace the OVF standard. The only other mention I could find is in the Enterprise Virtualization Management (EVM) suite from ManageIQ, which automates VM management tasks like event tracking, discovery and system monitoring. OVF is likely to make it easier for ManageIQ to track compliance across multiple platforms.

Still up in the air, though, is how Microsoft will approach OVF. The company has been involved in the DMTF deliberations, but has yet to declare any kind of compliance for the new Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) suite that’s due by the end of the year. Not only is this the first management tool for the Hyper-V platform, but it’s the first version to be unbundled from the System Center Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE), so its impact on the market could be significant.

With virtualization likely to be a commodity resource in a few short years, it is almost inconceivable that there won’t be a substantial universe of multi-platform enterprises out there. And since management is such a crucial aspect of any virtual environment, it’s good to know that there’s a strong chance that a single, centralized management stack is in the offing.

When we last left Yahoo!, Jerry Yang (CEO) and the rest of the board had just spurned Microsoft’s $44.6 billion takeover bid for the supposedly greener pastures of potential deals with AOL, News Corporation, and/or Google. The rejection of Microsoft’s bid also put the current board on a collision course with Carl Icahn in what looked to be a battle for control of Yahoo!’s board of directors.

Trials and Tribulations

After spending millions to buy 68.7 million shares of Yahoo!, Icahn was set to nominate his own slate of directors for Yahoo’s board at the company’s annual shareholder meeting. Icahn would use Yahoo! shareholders’ fury over the botched Microsoft deal to win votes for his board nominees and take over Yahoo!’s board. Yahoo! made a preemptive strike however and managed to appease Icahn by granting him three seats on Yahoo!’s board of directors in July. But what of the purported deals with AOL, News Corp, and Google?

Well, to date, the AOL and News Corp deals never materialized, at least publicly. However, Google and Yahoo! agreed to a partnership whereby Google would deliver ads on Yahoo!’s network. The kicker in the deal was that Google would pay Yahoo! more than Yahoo! could make with its own ads, meaning Google was essentially buying market share from Yahoo!.

This deal would be investigated by the U.S. Justice Department and opposed by Microsoft and online advertisers, who were arguing that the deal would be anticompetitive and result in higher ad prices. In the end, Google and Yahoo! were unable to appease Justice Department investigators by offering to cap the number of ads that would be displayed on Yahoo!’s network and Google walked away from the deal rather than fight a lengthy legal battle.

Just before Google walked away from the deal, Yahoo! reported 3rd quarter earnings. Operating income decreased 53% and revenues were virtually flat compared to the same quarter in 2007. In addition, Yahoo! announced it was laying off 1,500 employees as part of its efforts to cut costs. All told, the Microsoft bid, Icahn ordeal, and proposed Google partnership cost Yahoo! $73 million in fees for outside advisors according to a filing with the SEC.

In the wake of this double-whammy, Yahoo’s stock tumbled to around $10 per share from its 52-week high of $30.25, which it reached when Microsoft was attempting to acquire the company. Yahoo’s share of the search market also continued to decline, falling to 20% in September compared to 22.9% a year ago, according to comScore. What is Yahoo! to do? In a word, grovel.

“To this day, I believe the best thing for Microsoft to do is to buy Yahoo,” Yang said at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco, the Associated Press reports.

Still?!

To which Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer replied, “We made an offer, we made another offer, and it was clear that Yahoo didn’t want to sell the business to us and we moved on. We are not interested in going back and re-looking at an acquisition. I don’t know why they would be either, frankly. They turned us down at $33 a share.”

Could Ballmer be using his public comments to further drive down the value of Yahoo!’s stock before making another bid? Or is he stating his actual beliefs on the matter and only interested in “some kind of partnership around search?” Only time will tell, but it certainly seems like Microsoft is moving forward with new strategies for challenging Google.

Microsoft Moves On

Several of these strategies include new or extended partnerships. One such extended partnership is with long-standing Microsoft partner Hewlett-Packard, where Microsoft will install its Live Search toolbar on all HP computers in North America starting in January 2009.

Microsoft is also negotiating with Verizon to become the default search provider on the company’s cell phones, according to the Wall Street Journal. Though the terms of the deal are still being discussed, early indications are that the two companies would share ad revenue generated from web searches made on Verizon cell phones.

Yahoo!’s Future

What does Yahoo! do to secure its future as a viable Internet property going forward? Well, it’s changing leaders for one. In mid-November, Yahoo! announced Yang would be returning to his post as Chief Yahoo! as soon as the company found a new CEO. In addition, over the last few months, Yahoo! has rolled out a number of initiatives, releasing its own analytics package (similar to Google Analytics), updating the design of Yahoo! News, launching the APT (formerly AMP!) digital advertising platform, and announcing the Yahoo! Open Strategy, which aims to make Yahoo! programs open source.

While the change in leadership and these initiatives seem like steps in the right direction, we believe Yahoo! will need to pick a new CEO that brings fresh strategic ideas to the table and the company will need to develop significant proprietary innovations in search technology that convince users to switch back to Yahoo! for web searches. Yahoo! will probably need partners in this turnaround effort too. Microsoft is open to a partnership and combining search algorithm, mail, and instant messenger research efforts would save both companies substantial amounts of money. Such a partnership could also make Yahoo! the default search provider in Internet Explorer, Office, and other Microsoft software products and web properties. Whatever course Yahoo! chooses, hopefully it won’t be too little, too late.

Anybody know a fix for Audio/Video synch problems while watching CBSHD?
The Basics: 52″ HP Plasma tv (1080i) DirecTV HD DVR no home theatre setup, using tv speakers My problem comes down to one station single and thats CBS and my problem only occur when watching HD shows. Whenever I watch a show close to C.S.I. or more recently the NCAA basketball tournament, adjectives of which were within HD, there is a slight snag between what I see and what I hear. The delay is I don`t know less than 1/4 of a second, but it’s VERY clear. I’ll see someone talk, but I won’t hear it until 1/4 second next. This was extremely annoying watching basketball the final few weeks when you’d see the ball stir through the net, but wouldn’t hear the “swish” until the other troop inbounds the ball.. This also happen on every show broadcast in HD as powerfully as the local CBS news, which is surrounded by hd also. Any shows on CBS that are in standard definition are fine. Also any other shows contained by HD on any other channel are fine as economically. My problem is only beside my HD service on CBS. Any suggestions

I have an Apex Tv and it seem to cut off picture about an inch adjectives the way around. For example, on espn, the bottom red file that gives you score is cut off. Is in that anyway to adjust the tv so I can see everything, so it doesnt cut off any imitation?

Hey there, i only got a tentative sony kdl 32d3000, only if i turn the setting to 1080p on my xbox 360, when a dimness screen or a black pay for drop appears, you see like a barcode effect across the blind.(white black line across it, inch within thickness). Best Buy Home Service, I am really frustrated!! Help!?
I have a TV that I purchased from Best Buy a year ago and it fixed to crap out on me so I called best buy to repair it since I own a 4 year warranty. The environmental pressures of global warming have put increased emphasis on the need for alternative types of chemical refrigerants. The trend began in 1996, when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Air Act banned the manufacture of the most common refrigerants, because they contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer in our upper atmosphere that protects earth from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. These refrigerants were known by the trademark name of their manufacturer, DuPont, as Freon 12 and Freon 22, although we will refer to them here by their generic names, CFC-12 and HCFC-22. CFC-12 is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), a chemical combination of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine.

Chlorine is the culprit that zaps ozone. Under the EPA guidelines, CFC-12 was supposed to be phased completely out of use by the year 2000. In its place, related chemical compounds include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). However, HCFCs (HCFC-22) are also slated for extinction by the EPA somewhere between 2015 and 2030. HFCs, without chlorine, have skirted the ban so far; in fact, the most widely used alternative refrigerant is now HFC-134a. All refrigerants are hazardous when exposed to an open flame. Some of them contain butane or propane mixes blended into their formulas. If large quantities of refrigerant are released in a confined area, suffocation is a danger because refrigerant actually displaces oxygen.

Breathing refrigerant can cause nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and even death. Thus, any type of refrigerant gas should be handled by a professionally trained technician. Environmental risks and health warnings aside, the cooling power of the modern refrigerator comes from the repeated compression and expansion of a gas. As the gas expands, it cools and is cycled around an insulated compartment, chilling the contents inside. Ammonia, new chemical blends, and even space-age technology using sound waves to cool foods are other options that have been introduced recently with some success. In 2004 the ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s installed the first thermoacoustic freezer in a retail location, developed by Penn State University researchers.

Thermoacoustics is the premise that, as sound travels through air, it alters the temperature of the air. A loudspeaker is used to create 170 to 195 decibels of sound (and yes, that’s very loud) in a tube that contains inert, compressed gases (helium or argon), which are environmentally safer than CFCs. The sound causes the gas molecules to vibrate, expand, and contract. When they contract, they heat up; when they expand, they cool down. In refrigeration, the goal is to exhaust the heat generated as the soundwave is compressed and capture the chill as the soundwave expands. The loud screech emitted within the unit is muffled so it is heard as a quiet hum from the outside. Thermoacoustics cools using a type of sealed motor developed in the 1800s by Robert Stirling of Scotland.

You may hear the term “Stirling cycle technology” associated with CFCfree coolant ideas. A Stirling motor can be solar-powered, which is one of its potential “green” advantages. Another promising cooling technology is electromagnetism. A “magnetic” refrigerator can cool by repeatedly switching a magnetic field on and off. The current prototype is made with gadolinium, a metal used in the recording heads of video recorders. Gadolinium and magnets are not cheap, but the technology shows great potential for two reasons: Electromagnetism is environmentally safe (no CFCs), and does not require a compressor (no mechanical humming noise as the refrigerator cycles on and off).

At this writing, Astronautics Corporation of America in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is at the forefront of this field. Expect more technological breakthroughs as global warming headlines become more ominous. A group called Refrigerants, Naturally! formed early in this century by McDonald’s, and Unilever to develop and test HFC-free refrigeration technologies, making commitments to eliminate HFCs in their point-of-sale cooling applications. In 2007 Carlsberg, IKEA, and PepsiCo joined the group. How does the foodservice operator cope with the changes and the prospect of expensive new replacements for old workhorse refrigerators? Well, if your equipment is in good repair, you probably should do nothing as long as it lasts except keep it properly maintained.

This especially means cleaning the unit’s condensing coil once a month to prevent grease and dirt collection that block air circulation. If your refrigerator needs repair, you have two choices: Voluntarily retrofit it to use an alternative refrigerant, or purchase a new unit that is already equipped to use the newer refrigerants. Retrofitting almost always requires more than one service call and includes these steps: Recovering the outdated refrigerant, changing the coil in the compressor, replacing the filter or dryer, if necessary, recharging with the new refrigerant, checking performance for the first few weeks.

The EPA now has a sophisticated set of rules for refrigerator repair. The EPA certifies repair technicians and their equipment, and requires that they recycle or safely dispose of refrigerant by sending it to a licensed reclaimer. The rules also state that “substantial leaks…in equipment with a charge greater than 50 pounds” be repaired. This means if the unit leaks 35 percent or more of its pressure per year, it needs fixing. As the owner of commercial refrigeration equipment, you are also required to keep records of the quantity of refrigerant added during any servicing or maintenance procedure.

The EPA Web site contains summaries of the rules as well as lists of acceptable alternative refrigerants that don’t contain the ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons. They’re identified with abbreviations and numbers, such as MP-39, HP-80, R-406a, and GHG-X4, which probably don’t mean much to you as a foodservice employee. However, the important points to remember are: use an EPA-certified technician, with certified equipment, to do your refrigeration repair work. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is now authorized to test and approve alternative refrigerants, so look for the UL label on products. Keep your maintenance records updated. Violations of the Clean Air Act can result in fines of up to $25,000 per day.

If you have more than one piece of older equipment, plan a gradual phase-out or retrofit program. Don’t break your budget by trying to do it all at once. This information should also serve as a caution when you are looking at purchasing used equipment. Is the owner getting rid of it because it no longer meets the environmental rules?
